Start wearing the glasses 2 hours before preferred bed-time. That will allow your mind and body to settle down for the night. Keep the glasses on until the lights are turned off. Keep your bedroom as dark as possible during darkness-time.
If you wake up before preferred wakeup time, put the glasses on immediately and always before the lights are turned on.
After 1-2 weeks one extra hour of virtual darkness may be added. If your energy level drops too early in the evening or you wake up a lot earlier than you prefer, delay the start of darkness-time accordingly.
If you have an illness where medication is needed or if you are using prescribed medication other than melatonin;
do not stop taking your medication. Virtual darkness therapy is an ad-on to medication.
For the following reasons we strongly warn against stopping to take prescribed medication:
Clinical studies on long term use and use during depression are non-existing as of yet. The randomized controlled study on mania had an ad-on design (in addition to medication), and the effect of the virtual darkness eyewear is dependent on the day-to-day use. Pharmacological mood stabilizers act over longer periods of time even if you sometimes forget to take the medication. This way the combination of medication and virtual darkness therapy adds safety and predictability to the efficiency of this novel treatment option.
